let-me-write-it-out-for-you:

He told me not to become a poet,
because
instead of shrubs
I would see
green grass growing
from a branch reaching for the sky
and I would see
the sun giving us a warm hug
instead of a hot day.
He said it was a mistake
and the world would surround you
with adjectives
and punctuation
and metaphors that only
made sense in your little mind.
I think
this is the best mistake
I’ve ever made.
